Corky’s First Post

Hi my name is Corky!!
I am a 11 month old boy and I have what’s known as “claw foot” (It’s really Ectrodactyly but my dad can’t pronounce it so I keep it easy for him). People keep telling me that it is cute and that I am adorable but it really hurts me and I don’t use it very much. I can’t remember where I was born because I keep getting moved into different shelters but I did love living on a farm for a little while and getting to play with all the animals. My new dad just adopted me a few days ago and took me to a really nice vet who is going to help me with my leg!! They even took some pictures!

The vet told me that he can make my pain go away by removing my leg and I am really excited about that! I would love to be able to run and play with my brother Sam! I am really looking forward to having my surgery and keeping you all updated about my adventures!

  1. Corky, you hit the jackpot! How adorable are you? Recovery is a little bit rough – it’s up & down like a roller coaster, but it only lasts a couple of weeks, and then you will be doing zoomies all over the yard with Sam.
    Hugs to you!

  2. We can’t wait to hear more, and are so glad that you will be able to get rid of the painful leg! You and your brother are adorable!

  3. Corky, welcome! You sure are one handsome doggie. I’m so glad you found good people who take such great care of you.

Did the vet say anything about your being a good candidate for a prosthesis? Because it sure looks like you are. Watch our Orthopets videos, they talk about that:

I’d be happy to share what I know, so stop by the Forums if you’d like OK?

Can’t wait to follow along in your journey.

    1. Hi Jerry – Thanks for the information! I am working with a pretty good orthopedic vet http://metzgeranimal.com/team/bob-rider/ here in central PA. His opinion was that many dogs do better as tripawds than with prosthetic limb because the dog can’t actually receive feedback from the limb itself. Corky is an otherwise healthy and playful guy who just has pain from the limb. He can use the limb to bat at people and hold down a toy and even uses it to support himself on grass. There was the option of doing some fixation to the limb by stabilizing the wrist joint and casting it but the bones present don’t offer very much to secure into. He could be a candidate for a prosthetic but I am planning to make the call that gives him the most mobility and least long term issues and problems. More comments on that choice are very welcome! Is there specifically a part of the forum that discusses amputation vs prosthesis?
